The St. Leonard's Society of Hamilton's greenBYTE is a registered charitable not-for-profit organization, launched in 2001. We collect used, unwanted or end-of-use computer systems, refurbish them, and then provide these systems to low-income families and children in need at no cost. In our 15 year operational history, we have provided more than 4000 computers to low-income families in our community via partnerships with local organizations for youth.

We aid our volunteers in developing practical employment skills through computer certification. Our employment training program has worked with individuals exiting the prison system in making successful transitions into the community, as well as co-op students above the age of 18, Ontario Works recipients, individuals with disabilities, and others seeking new job skills. More than 100 trainees have attained A+ certification through our Employment Services program.

Many of our donations are end-of-use systems from local businesses. By refurbishing these units, we have diverted tons of electronic waste from landfills and returned it to useful operation. We responsibly recycle any components which cannot be returned to working order.

In the past, greenBYTE has been the recipient of three grants furnished by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the first of which was provided to aid in the "digital divide" in our community, and the second of which was to ensure that all Children's Aid Society and Catholic Children's Aid Society clients had access to technology. The third and most recent was to help fund the repairs of computer systems for low-income families. In 2007, we were one of six Ontario not-for-profit organizations honored in the Ontario Trillium Foundation's 25th biennial "Great Grant Awards".

Today, greenBYTE is a unique self-sustaining not-for-profit organization with a social mandate. We have launched a small retail operation in downtown Hamilton, which aids us in absorbing the cost of ongoing giveaways for youth while honoring our commitment to offering affordable access to computer systems. We are a Microsoft Authorized Refubisher, which allows us to install Windows operating systems at minimal cost. We provide parts and service maintenance for our clients free of charge. We are as committed as ever to aiding local youth in bridging the "digital divide".
